While some businesses went into hibernation during COVID-19, others like Sporties Barooga embarked on a quick turn-around major renovation and refurbishment.
Chief Executive Officer Bobby Brooks says the pandemic brought forward a long term strategy to implement some significant changes and upgrades.
“We’ve basically renovated and refurbished one entire side of our club, the west facing side of the club to the golf course, which was the third hole,” Bobby told bordercafe.com.au
“It’s also been a massive landscaping exercise, which includes a new green and re-numbering of the entire golf course.
“We have a new 24-metre deck, a lot of outdoor dining, a new restaurant, a new pro shop a new golfers lounge and a new kids room.”
Incorporating the golf club and pro-shop into the popular Sporties Barooga venue has already proven popular with visiting golfers.
“We recently ran a promotion to test the waters in Albury Wodonga, Wagga and the ACT and we’ve had around 60 thousand dollars’ worth of golf packages taken up from those areas,” explained Bobby.
“We’ve had a lot of repeat business already, from golf members in the Albury region in particular who have come up for a drive and weekend away. Even though we were in the middle of a construction zone, they could see what we were doing and they love it.
“About three or four of those groups have come back, double the size, two or three weeks later, so I think we can actually say we have the proof we’re on a winner.”
As the club emerges from hibernation and restrictions continue to ease the CEO says his enthusiastic staff can’t wait to welcome back visitors.
“On the back of COVID it almost feels like our staff have been craving to be busy again and mingling with customers, so you can be sure they’ll be making a special effort to any visitors who come into the place,” Bobby said.
“It’s really pleasing to see the staff with big smiles, up and about again and obviously more pleasing when you get those follow up emails and comments from visitors that they had an awesome experience and they’ll be back.”
